Crisis communication / media relations training

Who should attend?

Spokespersons and support personnel interested in understanding how the news media work and how they can communicate more effectively in a crisis situation.

The objectives are to:

  1. help participants to coordinate internally and operate more effectively during crisis situations;
  2. teach participants how to coordinate with partners and stakeholders during a crisis;
  3. clarify participants’ understanding of the nature of news and the news media;
  4. teach participants how to prepare for and conduct media interviews and public presentations within their areas of responsibility;
  5. help participants develop and effectively deliver messages to and through journalists to target audiences;
  6. assist organizations in identifying excellent candidates for the spokesperson role; and,
  7. help participants understand the nature of crisis communication related to public safety and health, and apply those principles.

Content includes:

  1. an analysis of the need to coordinate internally and with partners and stakeholders before, during and after a crisis;
  2. an analysis and discussion of the components of news;
  • a discussion of journalists’ and public servants’ mutual perceptions;
  • preparing for and conducting interviews and news conferences / technical briefings;
  • preparing for on-camera interviews;
  • preparing and delivering messages;
  • crisis and proactive communications, and
  • reality-based audio and videotaped role-playing exercises.

There is an emphasis on individual and group exercises to apply and reinforce the principles introduced.
