Media relations training
The course objectives are to:
- clarify participants' understanding of the nature of news, journalists and the news media;
- remind them of the limits of their responsibilities when dealing with the news media;
- help them develop communications strategies and effectively deliver messages when dealing with the news media;
- help them relate to questioners and respond effectively to difficult questions and situations.
The course content includes:
- an analysis and discussion of the components of news;
- a discussion of journalists' and public servants' mutual perceptions;
- Treasury Board's revised guidelines on relations with the news media; or
- Communications Best Practices for non federal government clients
- preparing and delivering messages;
- preparing for and conducting interviews;
- proactive communications.
There is an emphasis on individual and group exercises to apply and reinforce the principles introduced.
