Preparing for Parliamentary Committees

Maximum Participants: 6 (representing a maximum of two subject areas)

Who should attend?
Organizational officials and subject matter experts, and their support staff, who may be called to appear before a Parliamentary Committee

The course objectives are to:

  • define the steps to be taken by witnesses when invited to appear before a Committee;
  • help participants to develop/test and effectively deliver the organization’s messages to Committee Members and the Canadian public;
  • assist witnesses and their support staff to better prepare and more effectively deliver presentations and briefs; and,
  • aid participants in the preparation for, and anticipation of, questions from the Committee and the news media.

The course content includes:

    • an overview of Committees and their role;
    • an overview of the role of witnesses during Committee appearances; 
    • how to prepare and deliver messages;
    • how to prepare for and participate in question and answer sessions;
    • a discussion of the role and value of support people and internal coordination; and,
    • an exploration of the actions to be taken before, during and after the appearance.

There is an emphasis on individual and group exercises to apply and reinforce the principles introduced.
